Wekiva Culinary Paid Internship Program
A year-long, for-credit program in which a limited number of seniors satisfy the requirements of the ProStart Certificate of Achievement, earn college credit, and acquire necessary industry skills while working as paid interns for Wekiva Culinary Catering and Events. Many of our upper level students do not have access to transportation and would otherwise not be able to satisfy the requirements of the ProStart COA and would otherwise be unable to earn that important certification.
MustangChef Summer Camp
A two week-long cooking camp for 75 high-need 8th and 9th grade middle school students, giving the children an opportunity to prepare complete meals, become familiar with commercial restaurant equipment, and explore the culinary field while working with Wekiva Culinary seniors, local chefs, taking field trips to restaurants and hotels, competing against one another in a MasterChef Junior-Style Cookoff, then preparing a meal for their parents during the Awards Banquet. Your generous support will enable us to offer camp scholarships and to keep the registration fee low.
Mustang Cafe
Our in-school restaurant, the Mustang Cafe, has been in renovation for a year. We need help completing three projects in order to finally finish this project successfully: the beverage station cappuccino machine, the Host station POS system, and the renovation of the lighting system from classroom fluorescent to recessed and pendant. Our goal is to provide our students with a realistic mini-restaurant to practice hospitality and customer service skills, money handling and POS system operation, beverage service, and facility maintenance.
Wekiva Culinary Awards Banquet
Wekiva Culinary’s signature event of the year is our Annual Awards Banquet where we celebrate Program successes, honor students for outstanding achievements, award certifications and trophies, recognize our donors, and look forward to the next year’s challenges and opportunities. The Award Banquet is a great chance for supporters to demonstrate their dedication to the community, build strong networking ties with city, county, and business leaders.
Kitchen Equipment and Maintanence
Like all commercial kitchens, ours requires regular maintenance. This is especially true since our cooks are teenagers! Currently, we have two hotdog rollers in the repair shop, three blenders soon to join them, our knives need to be sharpened, and two ovens need to be serviced. Most of these types of repair are funded through student catering and special events work. However, we need the help of our community to keep our kitchen in safe working order and to expand available tools for the best learning environment possible.
