Get in the Kitchen: Safe Students, Safe Food

Every year, every one of our students are required (by law) to do one of two things:

  • get trained in how to avoid getting hurt in the kitchen (personal safety) and how to handle food safely (cook in such a way you don’t get people sick)…. OR
  • have a REFRESHER COURSE on these two things

Why?

If you slip and fall in our kitchen, if you burn or cut yourself, if you trip and drop a stand mixer you are carrying on your foot, breaking every single one of your toes… I need PROOF we tried to teach you how to NOT DO ANY OF THOSE THINGS.

In the same way, if you forget to wash your hands and give every single student and teacher at our school Norovirus and the whole campus is struck with a terrible case of screaming diarrhea, I need proof that you knew how to NOT DO THAT. The Health Inspector will ask to see PROOF that you got food safety training and if I can’t provide it, I get in SERIOUS trouble.

So…. We start every year with the same training: how to avoid injuries (and what to do if you get hurt) and how to handle food safely.

Once this is done, we can move on.
