10 Reasons to Visit: Culinary Magnet Open House 2024

This coming Thursday, January 18th, the Magnet Academy of Culinary Arts is opening its doors to future students and their families. We hope you will join us for a tour of our facility, cooking demonstrations, and a Q & A session.

We don’t want you to come just to say hello (although that will be nice!). We think you should come for some very specific reasons… and here they are, in no particular order:

1. Meet current students and ask questions about student life

No one can tell you what being a culinary student is like BETTER than one of our current students. Many will be on hand to answer your questions, to demonstrate their skills, and to take you and your family on a tour of the facility.

2. Find out what a typical school week looks like for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors

Going from middle to high school can be a significant change. You and your student need to get an accurate idea of what this new environment is going to be like. Here are some of the questions you will want to ask:

  • How much will it cost each year?
  • What special tools, uniforms, or supplies will my student need?
  • How often will my student cook each year?
  • What additional requirements does the culinary program have that regular classes do not?

3. Meet the instructional staff and ask questions about their teaching style and professional backgrounds

We are very proud of our Culinary teachers and want you to know just how experienced and prepared they are to help your student to grow. Each of our teachers will be present to explain their background and answer your questions

4. Explore the facility, tools, and equipment you will learn to use

One of the many things that makes Wekiva Culinary so special is the great number of unique tools and commercial equipment our students learn to use and master. Touring the facility and seeing all the cool things your student will get to work with is worth the trip alone!

5. Discover work-to-learn and internship opportunities during school and after graduation

All of our students have the right to apply for special learning experiences outside the classroom through our network of industry partnerships, paid and unpaid internships, and work-to-learn classes. You will definitely want to ask questions and get all the details about this valuable opportunity.

6. See what the school has to offer your student outside of the kitchen – in academics, fine arts, athletics, clubs, and more

We know that there is more to high school than the kitchen… and we want you and your student to see just how many opportunities there are at Wekiva to excel. Meet the sponsors of different clubs, athletic coaches, and more.

7. Ask about joining our nationally-ranked competition team

A very small number of our students compete against one another for the privilege of representing us across the nation at culinary competitions. Meet some of our current and former competitors and learn just how fun and exciting it can be to go up against the best culinary students in the country for scholarships and prizes.

8. Learn about our respected science-of-food program

Every year, our Culinary Arts magnet focuses on a different science-of-food project… digging deep into how engineering, chemistry, and technology work together to make the foods we love. Last year, we studied Chocolate. This year, we are focusing on Ice Cream. Come and sample student work and learn how your student can join the exploration.

9. Get the details on how our after-school catering and special events program works

Our students learn by doing – and we do a lot. You will definitely want to learn all the ways your student can get involved with our world-class catering and special events program. You can even join the raffle for a free ticket to our next catered event.

10. Find out how the professional certifications your student will earn will help them during school and after graduation

Our students graduate with more than a diploma – they leave with a resume and several professional certifications that are respected by industry leaders and employers. You will want to learn how students prepare for the test and how best to support them as they prepare for the important exam (and all the ways that earning the certification will help them!)
